New England Eye Center
Acquires Framingham Ophthalmology Practice

Pediatric Ophthalmologist Richard J. Blocker, MD
Joins Eye Center Practice

BOSTON, MA September 1, 2009– New England Eye Center (NEEC, the Ophthalmology Department of Tufts Medical Center) has acquired Pediatric and Adult Ophthalmic Associates of Framingham owned by Richard J. Blocker, MD and the recently retired Edward Miller, MD. The practice will continue much as before the name changed on September first at 181 Concord Street (Rte. 126) near Framingham Center.

The office is now called New England Eye Center – Framingham as new signage on the building shows. Dr. Blocker, a pediatric ophthalmologist, who has practiced in Framingham for 36 years, will continue seeing patients as a NEEC physician and associate clinical professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine.

Dr. Blocker graduated from Boston University School of Medicine (member of the first graduating class from the combined six-year program in Liberal Arts and Medicine) and completed an ophthalmology residence at Boston Medical Center.

Dr. Blocker has devoted his professional life to the care of children and special needs patients. He was the director of the Ophthalmology Program at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center for Mental Retardation from its inception until 1978. He also serves as the Director of the Ophthalmology Service at the Franciscan Hospital for Children (since 1990).

He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics where he serves on the executive board for the subsection in Ophthalmology.

NEEC ophthalmologists Daniel Hu, MD (cornea and cataract) and Amy Parminder, MD (glaucoma and cataract) who have been seeing patients in Framingham for some time will continue in the office as well. Two other NEEC Pediatric Ophthalmologists also will be available in Framingham – Drs. Mitchell B. Strominger and Vicki M. Chen.

In February, general ophthalmologist Roger Weber, MD will be joining the practice. Other subspecialists also will be available on a part-time basis.

The New England Eye Center offers many advantages not usually found in a suburban office. It provides the most current and comprehensive services in ophthalmology for adults and children. It is a complete clinical and technical center for the testing and treatment of all types of eye diseases and visual problems.

New England Eye Center

The New England Eye Center (NEEC), is the ophthalmology department at Tufts Medical Center, a major academic and tertiary referral medical center, seeing approximately 85,000 patient visits per year and providing the highest quality tertiary ophthalmic services with referrals from all over the world. During the last three years alone, New England Eye Center physicians have led or participated in approximately 30 clinical trials and currently more than a dozen clinical trials are underway.
