Pediatric Ophthalmology
Fellowship Program
The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus fellowship
at the Department of Ophthalmology, Tufts University School of Medicine,
is a one year clinical program combining clinical training, academic
activities and clinical research opportunities.
The fellow receives extensive training in the evaluation
and management of pediatric ophthalmic disorders as well as strabismus
in both adults and children. The fellow is an active participant
in busy outpatient clinic, inpatient consultations, as well as the
operating room.
A new, state-of-the-art, five lane Pediatric Ophthalmology
and Strabismus Center was opened in September 1996 in the Floating
Hospital for Infants & Children at Tufts Medical Center.
There are ample opportunities for collaboration with the many excellent
departments within the hospital.
The fellow is expected to develop independent judgment
and technical skills in an environment devoted to excellence in
patient care. The fellow will work closely with medical students
as well as pediatric residents and Ophthalmology residents rotating
on the Service, with many teaching and clinical research opportunities.
Patient Evaluation
The evaluation of pediatric Ophthalmology and strabismus
patients is an essential component of planning patient care. The
fellow will participate in the evaluation of common pediatric ophthalmic
problems as well as complex disorders in children and adults with
strabismus. The Center sees a high percentage of referral patients
with significant systemic and ophthalmic pathology from ophthalmologists
and pediatricians. The Visual Physiology Laboratory is located within
the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Center and provides special
studies in support of the Center, including preferential looking,
ERG, VEP, as well as other studies.
The Floating Hospital for Children has extensive
consultation support and imaging capabilities which are commonly
utilized in the evaluation and management of patients. In addition,
the nearby subspecialty resources and special diagnostic capabilities
of the Department of Ophthalmology are always available, and frequently
used.
Research
The fellow is strongly encouraged to participate
in teaching and research during the fellowship year. There are numerous
opportunities for clinical research within the Pediatric Ophthalmology
and Strabismus Center as well as in collaboration with other subspecialty
services within the Department of Ophthalmology and the Floating
Hospital for Children.
Affiliated Hospitals
The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Center
is located in the Floating Hospital for Children at the New England
Medical Center in downtown Boston. In addition, the Pediatric Ophthalmology
and Strabismus Service provides subspecialty care as well as surgery
in several affiliated clinics and Boston area hospitals. The fellow
will travel to some of these clinics and also participate in surgery
in these facilities.
