Pediatric Ophthalmology offered at New England Eye Center

The Pediatric Ophthalmology and Ocular Motility (Strabismus) service provide care for a wide variety of ocular problems and visual disorders in children, as well as adults with strabismus, including:

  • Refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism)
  • Amblyopia (or “lazy eye”) evaluation and treatment
  • Strabismus (crossed eyes, wandering eyes)
  • Abnormal fusion, depth perception, and other sensory abnormalities
  • Convergence insufficiency
  • Double vision
  • Infections or inflammations of the eye and orbit (e.g., conjunctivitis, cellulitis)
  • Blocked tear ducts
  • Congenital malformation of the eye and orbit
  • Retinopathy of Prematurity
  • Congenital and juvenile cataracts
  • Injuries to the eye
  • Eye problems associated with genetic conditions
  • Eye screening for juvenile diabetics and juvenile arthritis
  • Eye problems associated with thyroid disorders
  • Adjustable sutures during strabismus surgery
  • Topical anesthesia in selected adult strabismus patients
  • Pre-operative prism adaptation to increase surgical precision
  • Binocular vision assessments
  • Pediatric contact lens services for selected eye disorders

We share offices with the Electrophysiology Service which evaluates vision in preverbal children using visual evoked potentials and preferential looking techniques.

Pediatric patients with cataracts, glaucoma, corneal and retinal disorders are provided a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services in conjunction with other New England Eye Center sub-specialty areas.

Pediatric Optometry is also available for comprehensive eye exams, contact lens fitting and management, and vision therapy services including orthoptic exercises.

The Orthoptic Service evaluates a patient’s binocular status with specialized testing to determine any underlying disorder of the visual, motor, and sensory systems of the eye.

This service is provided for children, as well as adults with strabismus. Orthoptic services available include:

  • Complex strabismus evaluation
  • Pre-operative evaluation
  • Pre-operative prism adaptation test
  • Complex double vision evaluation and treatment with prisms
  • Amblyopia treatment
  • Convergence insufficiency exercises
  • Intermittent exotropia exercises
