Specialties

Reza Vagefi, M.D. is Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at Tufts University, School of Medicine. He is the Director of the New England Eye Center at Tufts Medical Center. 

Dr. Vagefi specializes in oculofacial plastic and orbital surgery. He is recognized in the field for his contributions to the treatment of orbital tumors and infections. He has developed new surgical methods for oculofacial plastic surgery and has trained over 100 medical students, residents, and clinical fellows. Dr. Vagefi is well published in peer reviewed journals and regularly presents at national and international meetings. 

Dr. Vagefi is acknowledged by national organizations as one of the top doctors in the United States in his subspecialty. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and member of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). Dr. Vagefi has served on the Board of Directors for ASOPRS as the Director of Fellowship Education. He has also served on the AAO Basic and Clinical Science Course Committee and Ophthalmic Technology Assessment Committee. He has been recognized with a number of awards including an AAO Achievement Award and an ASOPRS Service Award.

Clinical Interest

Dr. Vagefi specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, tear drainage system, orbit, and face. He has a particular interest in skull-based tumors and complex orbital and adnexal reconstructions.

Research Interests

Dr. Vagefi’s research has focused on surgical and quality of life outcomes, patient specific implants for oculofacial reconstruction, metagenomics of orbital inflammatory disease, multidisciplinary approaches to the skull base, and diagnostic imaging and treatment of acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis.
